Humanities analysis

Initial Post

Values are a very important aspect of human experience since they determine us, our personality, identity and our decision and association. In Module 2 reading, a number of values are identified as practical to the concept of what it means to be human. First, empathy is emphasized as necessary to understand the emotions of another person (Human Experience 12). Second, the meaning of freedom legitimizes the meaning of autonomy and self-direction (Human Experience 15). Third, creativity is an ability to express ourselves and be creative (Human Experience 17). Fourth, the described sense of community takes us into the condition of existence of shared experience and possession (Human Experience 19). Fifth, our purpose helps us to make substantial decisions (Human Experience 21). Sixth, identity influences our methods of self-viewing in culture and society (Human Experience 23). Seventh, resiliency arises within the environment of conquering all odds (Human Experience 25). Eighth, integrity is developed as a requirement on moral coherence (Human Experience 27). Ninth, exploration and development is concerned with intrigue (Human Experience 29). Lastly, respect is used to provide dignity in our communication with other people (Human Experience 30).

Not only do these values occur in the textbook, but they also are consistent with academic views. Brene Brown provides an example as part of this: integrity is a highly significant aspect of reliable leadership: being bold enough to do what is right rather than pursuing fun, fast, and easy; being skilled enough to do what is right instead of pursuing comfort (Brown 5). This supports the role of integrity as a guide to the moral core in individual and group life.

Part 2 – Essay: Personal Values & Identity

Personal Values and Identity

Values are influential in my formation and my becoming. They form the foundation of my decision, my personality and interaction with other people. We can be provided with a set of values (the textbook outlines how), values can provide us with a framework of meaning according to which human action is inclined to act. Much of what I am and what I believe about the importance of being honest and strong and caring has been formed by my family life.

Among these childhood tales was one, in which my mother and father explained to me that candor was the greatest of all virtues. I recall at least one of those moments when I knocked over a vase and felt terrible telling anyone about it and then my dad shrugged and told me to do the right thing and not to get caught. Due to that encounter, I have become convinced of the fact that he/she must speak the truth even under tough circumstances. This is consistent with the assertion stated in the textbook that integrity is a virtue that upholds human dignity (The Human Experience 27).

The second of these shaping moments was when I could see my grandmother struggle and languish in despair. She might simply remind me that nothing bad lasts long but that is an opportunity to be tough. Right after her example I figured out and one of the features such as image of surviving hard times was explained and expounded on using her example. Later lecture materials explain resilience will be the critical element in the human identity that connects struggles to development (Module 2 Lecture).

Finally, I have been taught to be compassionate as a value in my life. As a child, my family welcomed the needy in our home and as a result, I learned that being generous brings people together. The text also argues that compassion increases the human capacity to empathize with each other and thereby follow a shared way (The Human Experience 19).

I still have those values as part of my future goals. Going forward, I would like to exemplify honesty, strength and compassion in my working life and relationships. And not only do they hold lessons of the past, but also of the individual I am becoming.
