The Effect of Human Development on Groundwater Sustainability Purpose

The idea behind the Groundwater Sustainability Lab is to analyze the impact of human development and exposure on groundwater level and quality, such as industrialization, population increase and agricultural development. The objective of this lab is to get to know how land use change is related to the sustainability of groundwater resources in the long run.

Introduction

Sustainability of groundwater is an environmental issue of high concerns as human beings would continue to manipulate natural ecosystems. The disturbance of the balance of the groundwater systems has occurred significantly due to the process of human development such as deforestation and urbanization. Deforestation decreases the natural absorption of precipitation into ground and through urbanization, land surfaces are covered with non-permeable surfaces like asphalt and concrete covering decelerates groundwater recharge aviation. On the same note, the heavy agricultural activities and industrial activities attract vast amounts of water in aquifers resulting in depletion. In the long run, these aspects lead to a reduction in the level of groundwater and a factor in the saltwater intrusion, particularly in the coastal regions. The subsequent development of history since the 1800s to the 2000s proves that with the advancement of the humankind the cover of forests and the rise of the groundwater level diminished sharply. Hence these effects must be learnt to design viable water management techniques.

Hypothesis / Predicted Outcome In the case of a further rise of human development, groundwater levels will fall, and the saline intrusion will become more severe, as time goes by. Methods The experiment involved historical analysis technique, which established the simulated alteration of sustainability in groundwater between 1800s and 2000s. A data table was prepared to note down the observations at every time period on the basis of the variables like forest cover, groundwater table, salt water intrusion, agricultural activities, industrial advancement, and population expansion. Data analysis was done in a series to identify the trends in each century. It was done by comparing the levels of human activities and depletion of natural resources to determine the correlations between development and sustainability of groundwater. This chronological analysis gave the opportunity to visualize clearly the effect that increment in human activity had on the quality and quantity of groundwater with time.   Results / Outcome These findings indicated a steady decrease in forest boundaries and ground water supply with increase in human development. The forest was also plentiful in the 1800s, they had plenty of ground water availability and no saltwater intrusion. By the 20 th century, there was a fifty percent decline in forest cover and groundwater as industrialization and population increased exponentially. Intrusion of salt water was apparent following the infiltration of ocean water in underground water sources. By 2000s, matters had gotten worse-forests and level of ground water had dropped by 90 percent and salt water intrusion had considerably risen. Though the growth in industrial and housing declined somewhat by 10-15 per cent in 2000s, the destruction in groundwater systems was terrible. Discussion / Analysis The findings of the research supported the argument that more human development will reduce ground water sustainability. The statistics indicated that there is a close relationship between industrialization, population increase and environmental degradation. Deforestation lowered the natural water infiltration and urbanization and agricultural expansions increased water usage and contamination. Even minimal decreases in industrial and housing development in the 2000s could not turn back depletion of groundwater, which indicates that restoration efforts should be long-term to avoid recovery. The urgent necessity of the sustainable resource management practices that are highlighted in this lab is evident in the aspects of reforestation, minimized groundwater extractions, and better water recycling. Finally, the results highlight that there should be equilibrium both human growth and conservation of the environment in order to save groundwater resources to be used by the future generation.
