Ethical Issues and Dilemmas in Correctional Institutions
The Women in Prison: Sexual Misconduct by Correctional Staff (U.S. General Accounting Office, 1999) reveals severe breaches of ethical conduct that take place when the power of correctional personnel may be misused by persons grouping women in jails. The ethical principles that are involved are justice, respect in human dignity, non-maleficence, and integrity. Abuse of authority through sexual misconduct by the staff is a breach of professional ethics and contravene of moral and legal responsibility to offer a safe environment. Such acts as well damage the faith that people have on correctional systems and also emphasize the vulnerability of female inmates who rely on the staff to get their basic needs and security.
The correctional staff and administrators are required to overcome these obstacles by employing powerful ethical leadership and showing accountability frameworks. They can adopt open reporting policies, administer punishment on culprits, and initiate frequent ethics and Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) education to avoid ignorance (Hemmens et al., 2019). Additionally, the administrators are to create a culture of honesty, respect, and protection of the whistleblowers whereby the staffs should be given power to speak out against unethical conducts without the fear of being intimidated.
Systemic transformation needs to be gender-sensitive in its increased hiring, trauma-informed, and externally direct to avoid mishaps. Moral responsibility can be reinforced by increasing the presence of women among the personnel and incorporating ethical models of decision-making into the policy (Stojkovic et al., 2023). Finally, upholding morality in corrections is critical to safeguarding the inmate rights and promoting justice in the institutional justice systems.
