Conflict management part 1 and 2
Part 1
Two members from a college team project developed a conflict because they disagreed about how to distribute the workload. Between the two team members Alex believed their share of work was unjustly high yet Jordan maintained it was balanced correctly. Silence turned into tension between Alex who displayed anger and Jordan who defended his position by mentioning existing obligations. The disagreement caused team meetings to stop while simultaneously delaying all important decisions. The team leader made an attempt to intervene by enabling both team members to state their frustrations yet the conversation escalated beyond control without finding a quick solution.
The textbook lessons and this situation led me to understand that I should have dealt with the issue earlier. The prevention of this conflict would have been possible through the establishment of clear expectations combined with early open communication. A developed process to listen carefully to each side must have taken place to prevent emotions from getting out of control.
Interpersonal communication represents an essential factor to resolve the issue properly. My active listening technique will involve restating the worries expressed by others to confirm their comprehension. Through empathic communication I would confirm my understanding of the high-pressure situations that burdened each team member. Using proper respect in the dialogue alongside "I" statements instead of accusatory words would stop the conversation from turning into personal arguments.
For conflict management I will implement a collaborative method because this strategy generates solutions in which all participants secure worthwhile results. Our team tasks distribution follows problem-solving methods which include examining various solutions until we reach an equal and fair allocation of work. I would deploy a compromising strategy to make sure each person feels their needs were adequately addressed though no party would receive their total wishes.
Part 2: case 4.3 on conflict resolution
Conflict resolution requires detailed examination since people's approaches regarding disputes determine how they handle interpersonal behaviors. When Mary asked Joan to borrow her car in Case 4.3: The Would-Be Borrower their contrasting viewpoints and communication practices created a conflict. The case exhibits difficulties that develop when an assertive party interacts with a person who wants to avoid confrontations thus inhibiting joint work between them.
How Conflict Resolution Options Depend on the Other Person’s Behavior
The effectiveness of conflict resolution depends primarily on the ways in which both persons choose to act and react during conflicts. Any person who has a certain conflict resolution strategy will need to change their approach based on how the other party responds. Collaboration remains either challenging or impossible whenever a person wants to discuss while their counterpart demonstrates dismissiveness or defensiveness or aggression. (Lewis, D. (2022)
The individual characteristics and expectations between Joan and Mary shaped their respective reactions to the problem. Mary displayed a strong and direct manner toward Joan by demanding the car loan while Joan behaved passively by steering clear from any discussion of her emotions. The refusal of Joan to have direct communication with Mary led Mary to grow frustrated since she felt ignored by Joan without explanation. Joan likely avoided the conversation because Mary continued pressing her which led to Joan feeling pressed instead of welcomed for dialogue.
A person's success in resolving a conflict depends highly on how receptive the other person remains during the resolution process. Both parties need to accept talking along with sharing information while searching for an agreement that benefits them equally. The unwillingness or defensive behavior of one party will compel the other person to adopt alternative conflict resolution methods.
A Personal Example of a Difficult Collaboration Attempt
The decision to collaborate remains a strong preference in real life situations yet other individuals can make this approach challenging through negative responses. Workplace conflicts that occur through scheduling problems serve as an example. When an employee seeks schedule negotiation with their co-worker they focus on creating mutually beneficial arrangements. The attempting individual either needs to accept their coworker's demands for control or confront them using competitive methods based on their refusal to cooperate.
I attempted to use a collaborative approach to request time off from my colleague during a previous work experience. I suggested to share our holiday shifts equally between us to let each of us attend family-time. My coworker refused to accept any major holiday limitations even though I had voiced my concerns and would not make concessions. Since dialogue remained impossible the situation required me to change my approach. I established a firmer stance afterward to declare I had carried out holiday duties in past years thus making it fair for us to share time off. My coworker's uncooperative attitude required me to show stronger determination instead of continuing to work together thus resolving the situation.
The disagreement between Joan and Mary displays parallels to the situation where Mary asked for something (car use) from reluctant Joan who did not communicate her opposition directly. Each situation required new strategic adjustments since both Joan and Mary maintained opposite ways of conversing. (Rachmad, 2022).
Alternative Conflict Resolution Styles for Joan and Mary
I would approach the situation differently than Joan by using a strong direct communication while avoiding a passive strategy. The passive behavior adopted by Joan caused Mary to become annoyed because she believed Joan was purposefully avoiding conversation. Joan could have prevented the tension between them by discussing the issue at its beginning and keeping her boundaries clear. The problem could have been avoided through a polite direct statement such as "I cannot give my only vehicle but will drive you whenever needed."
My strategy as Mary would have consisted of combining comprehension with questioning methods instead of maintaining continuous persistence. Instead of drawing the conclusion that Joan was difficult to work with I should have asked her to explain herself. The open response would have enabled Joan to voice her concerns instead of forcing her to respond with either approval or denial of the request. The conflict between Joan and Mary might have experienced less productive outcomes if Joan displayed directness together with Mary showing understanding behaviors. Joan should have expressed her resistance to Mary with respect while Mary needed to make her request with more empathetic sensitivity.
How a Different Approach Might Have Changed the Outcome
The conflict would possibly have ended differently because better communication approaches from either Joan or Mary could have been effective. Early expression of assertiveness from Joan could have stopped Mary from developing either frustration or pushy behavior. The outcome could have improved if Mary would have demonstrated greater patience because this would have allowed her to sense Joan's discomfort leading to an appropriate adjustment of her request.
A different solution could have emerged from Joan agreeing to drive Mary instead of handing over her vehicle. Joan would provide transportation to Mary as she could drive her own vehicle instead of loaning it which solved both concerns. An alternative approach presented by Joan might involve assisting Mary to discover other options for transport. (Rahim, 2023).
A compromise instead of avoidance alongside pressure might have enabled the friends to sustain their relationship alongside finding solutions that fit them both. The interaction between the women failed to improve until they shifted their conflict resolution techniques thus their disagreement intensified without achieving any meaningful resolution.
Conclusion
Both individuals need to actively pursue constructive engagement for the process of resolving conflict to work. The conflict intensified between Joan and Mary because Joan avoided conversations while Mary remained insistent on her positions which made achieving joint work unachievable. The situation between Joan and Mary would have improved if Joan displayed assertiveness along with directness and Mary showed flexibility and understanding of Joan's needs. The situation demonstrates how refusal to participate in open dialogue requires the remaining party to change their approach. When collaboration proves impossible in actual conflicts people should employ clear communication and assertiveness together with empathetic understanding to deal with disagreements better.
