Psychological Assessment for Chief Bromden: Instruments and Ethical Considerations
The evaluation of Chief Bromden needs psychological instruments which show both validity and reliability to reveal his mental health condition as well as his personality organization and latent psychological disorders. Three particular mental health assessment tools would help evaluate the patient: the MMPI-2-RF, Rorschach and the TAT. These psychological instruments fulfill individual assessments to assess the patient's mental reactions. The assessment faces various social justice and ethical hurdles because the psychologist available is Anglo.
Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF)
One of the most common personality assessment tools available today is the MMPI-2-RF because it enables the evaluation of psychopathology alongside personality traits. The instrument would assist in evaluating the intensity of Bromden's paranoia. It aso helps to evaluatepossible mood changes because he has been institutionalized since his time in the war. Advisory scales in the MMPI-2-RF identify response discrepancies which makes this assessment valuable for assessing people who might conceal thoughts because they distrust those in authority positions. Client examination through this assessment method enables medical professionals to diagnose Bromden’s symptoms accurately. The test results should incorporate cultural sensitivity due to its original Western normative approach which does not fully represent Bromden’s Native American perspective. (Schmidtke, 2020).
Rorschach Inkblot Test
Through the Rorschach Inkblot Test projective psychological evaluation one can measure Bromden's reality interpretation abilities as well as his thoughts and hidden conflicts. The Rorschach test can help establish how Bromden understands vague images because it measures his interpretation skills. Self-report assessment lacks the flexibility of this test which enables unstructured examination of his mental states thus making it appropriate for those with difficulties in verbal communication. The psychologist needs to exercise caution when concern about schizophrenia symptoms overlaps with cultural understandings of reality in spiritual beliefs.
Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
Through the TAT a psychological professional can reach a deeper understanding of Bromden's psychological and emotional well as his internal struggles along with his methods to cope with everyday challenges. The psychologist guides Bromden to provide responses about unclear images to identify unresolved trauma which exist within his mind. The test is highly applicable to Bromden because he experienced both colonization oppression and institutional custody and social alienation since arriving at the barracks. Bromden's reaction to questioning will showcase his emotional damage plus his way of thinking concerning power structures along with his social interaction capabilities. (Sheperis et al. 2020).
Social Justice and Ethical Challenges
The use of an Anglo psychologist for mental health assessment poses major ethical justice concerns to Aboriginal. It also includes Torres Strait Islanders since no other psychologists are available. The main obstacle originates from cultural elements that affect assessment results. The psychological tests including the MMPI-2-RF derive their development from Western psychological models which may not properly capture individuals who belong to different cultural backgrounds. The cultural ways through which Bromden displays mental distress along with resilience experiences misinterpretation from others when examined from a Western psychiatric perspective. Standardized psychological testing norms need careful attention when assessing Bromden. This is because the psychologist must practice cultural humility while understanding they may not capture his true experience.
Historical trauma forms the main issue together with institutional distrust. Native American people have endured over generations of institutional oppression resulting from forced assimilation and land removal processes and medical facility mistreatment which culminated in mental health mistreatment. Bromden views the psychological assessment as a method of control because he has previously experienced institutional treatment through which he developed mistrust toward all mental health interventions.
Psychologists may mistakenly diagnose clients when they fail to differentiate cultural beliefs from genuine mental health symptoms that display in their patients. Native Americans practice certain religious rites which occasionally lead psychiatrists to mistake visions along with ancestral communion for hallucinations. The psychologist should use culturally encouraged methods during assessments while obtaining guidance from Native American mental health specialists if available and reading test results through Bromden's life story framework.
