Master program entry essay
Part 1: I would like to pursue psychology because I want to understand the human behavior, so that I can help people in a meaningful and life changing way. In the years I’ve been around, I’ve noticed a lot more of the emotional and psychological issues which people face and I want to try to find out how I can be useful to help people move through their individual problems, trauma and life changes. With a graduate degree in Applied Psychology available, I would have academic basis, research skills and professional tools to make my passion professional career.
This degree will allow me to become a licensed mental health professional for diverse populations, in a clinical and a community based setting. In order to be able to help people with anxiety and depression, relationship and emotional dysregulation problems, I want to practice as a counselor or a behavioral specialist. Given that I’m particularly keen on working with young adults, immigrants and underserved groups as they tend to have very special psychological hardness that often goes unseen and is inadequately served by mainstream mental health systems. After completing this program I am going to be ready to act upon mental health problems in the real world by designing culturally responsive interventions and applying psychological theory to generate more effective mental health outcomes specifically for those at risk.
If there is one thing I pride myself with it is the fact that I am quite empathetic. I’m an open minded, natural listener and would like to understand people without any judgement. Furthermore, they are the ones who have contributed to the formation of close interpersonal relations in life as well as in academia. Well, I am also very much highly motivated, organized and goal oriented. I will try to learn as fast as I can and try to take initiative as much as one can for the improvement of my skill. As I have a background with more traditional academic training I have become an adept critical thinker and apt researcher who is sure these skills will assist me in graduate level coursework and applied practice.
At the same time I am also the first to confess to mine. The only problem I face, is the public speaking in high pressure environment. I’m comfortable in one on in interactions, but I get anxious in conversations with groups about something idea, a topic, a thought, something that spans multiple complex things. For this, I make it a point to be involved in speaking workshops and volunteer to lead debate which has bothered to build up my confidence and clearness in communication. The other is advanced statistical analysis. I know the basics, but quantitative methods are essential in psychology and I will develop that skill in the course work supplement by tutoring and the extra study material provided by the program.
This program focuses on applied learning and giving practical experience and, thus, the fit my learning style and professional goals. I truly want to engage in practicum and research where I can connect the classroom with real experience. Especially, I think that it would be very interesting to me.
Part 2: My passion is in supporting people in healing themselves, finding themselves and achieving personal goals and that’s why I want to become a professional counselor. I am convinced that counseling is a very strong method for supporting people’s well being and that is why it unifies my professional duties with my beliefs. I take a deep satisfaction in being able to be present, hear someone’s experiences and help work out solutions together with them. Ensuring someone is seen and heard is as part of what I do in counseling is a thing that means something to me.
What I particularly want to know about counseling is how it approach the issue. Its purpose is to recognize each person’s individual story, to help him or her to solve their own problems. In other words, this is thinking and it makes all the difference. When I got a hold of my mental health problems and saw others in my community do the same thing I realized what a big help a support system is. Therefore, I look to use my practice to provide that kind of care and that care is done ethically, kindly and that caters to the needs of the people who come from various backgrounds.
I have a high Emotional Intelligence and that is why I am extra skilled at counseling. Reading feelings is one of my skills, dealing with people and talking to others in an empathic way. I feel that it is crucial that we can build a good therapeutic alliance with each other and a lot of people say they feel at ease and understood with me. Moreover, I own the capacity to remain relaxed during obstacles and careful listening skills in addition to having patience which is what makes counseling work.
Through education, have have gained more experience and competencies in the field. It has also given me proper methods and approaches of ensuring I understand and interpret human action. Gaining the new knowledge has helped me make the right decisions in the counselling field. I have previously experienced emotions whether I feel tired with life and being unable to take care of others. However, through asking for support and actively valuing other people, i receive support.
All in all, I am drawn to professional counseling since I want to support, encourage. It further makes a difference in the lives of people who do not know their next steps. Having received the right training, guidance and study, I am certain I will become a counselor filled with integrity and care.

Part 3: Though I have yet not worked in a clinical position in mental health, but I have volunteered for many events and classes in this area.
In my college academic years, I served as a peer mentor to the group of students joining the university for their first year. I was in this position because I was able to help students emotionally as well as give them good methods of reducing stress and refer them to the counseling services which were on campus. The majority of the students I had a chance to interact with had problems with leaving home, worry and with self confidence. With active listening and guiding them I was able to help them with their issues and gain their trust. In return I had learnt that I can relate with people emotionally as well as help them become stronger.
For instance, besides that, I also helped out at a neighborhood center that helps out kids with tutoring and mentoring in after school programs. I therefore studied the students and noticed that some of them had distressing emotions or behaviors which would likely be caused by tumultuous family situations or some types of traumatic experiences at home. I used positive techniques with program leaders and used me as a model for saying the right things and suggested therapy for kids when it was needed. I learnt there are many ways one can fall down in regards to mental health care and why it is very important to address those things earlier on.
Then, I went on and completed Mental Health First Aid which taught me to recognize the signs and respond with kindness in a mental health crises. I learned a lot about what’s needed to be culturally aware and act ethically when helping people through this training because of that.
I haven’t worked in counseling offices yet, but I feel that due to my volunteering experience I am prepared for graduate studies. What they have helped me with is how each age group may require emotional support, intervened with people better and even made me anticipate building my career in the field of mental health counseling. Doing supervised practicum and intern session as part of the program certainly will give me more experience.
Final statement: I believe to be important and deserving of respect, the story of a person has to be unique and that is because of individual differences as well as what these individuals go through in their lives. People may vary in their language readiness, religion, income, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical or mental condition and life experience, except for cultural and racial differences. I believe that for an aspiring counselor like myself, one of the biggest ways you can do what’s good and ethical is to accept, respect and not deny everybody’s experiences. Different factors influence a person’s life story which in turn influences how a person deals with the world and his/her mind and emotions.
Generally, this depends on earlier experiences, from which people learn to interact with the world, cope with challenges and to form relationships. In case of ignoring these aspects, the people do not understand the counseling, get wrong diagnosis and do not trust one another. If a counselor fails to pay attention to personal variations, then they end up developing methods that aren’t specific to the client’s situation. From another angle, a way to look at it would be that if your counselor empathizes, respects people’s stories and changes their strategy, he or she can create an atmosphere that is welcoming and healing. It is because of this way of listening that the therapeutic relationship is known to bring trust, change and growth to the client.
For me, I would say that everyone that comes to therapy should have their therapist see them and hear them. Thus, a counselor should be open minded handling the issue; listens and inquires and try to observe and acquire culture from the clients culture. Since being aware of the biases and privileges every professional carries and making sure that they do not influence the professional relationships with their clients is something that every professional needs to be aware of. Often you need to think about your performance and make sure you have brought some feedback from other people so that you keep your practice strong and make it more and more improved over time. And since counseling is still growing, the profession remains a beneficial, ethical and culturally sensitive one.
Also, they should know how they help their clients to deal with vibrant issues in the society and its institutions. Some people are exposed to trauma that is made worse due to things such as racism and poverty or lack of access to health care. A counselor thinks about and include the personal, social and cultural factors when working with the clients. The thought is, if we honor what these individuals have gone through and accept these individuals for who they are and where they are, then we support them and create a safe place for healing. For this reason such an approach does not link the issue to the client’s own doings, but rather encourages the client to fix those issues that result from being marginalised by the system.
I have a duty and responsibility to equality and inclusivity that means that I should respect the client and empower them during every counseling session. I know that I need to learn a lot and am willing to learn through classes, deep thinking and supervision. It is a life – long process of an honor where we should always reflect on individual differences. My ambition is to become a counselor which helps people heal and, further, to make a difference in the way mental health should be treated as a whole.
