Journal on communication and management skills

In this course, I have acquired knowledge about resolving conflicts and negotiations in labor and management practices. The first critical insight was that one cannot simply listen passively to resolve problems. I learned to foster mutual respect by properly understanding all the parties’ perspectives. The second insight was in managing disputes, which is the factor of emotional intelligence. One of the things that proved essential was recognizing and regulating my own and other people’s emotions, to de-escalate tense situations and build trust. Finally, I toned my estimations about preparation in negotiations. This helped in my research in the interests, setting the objective, and anticipating the counterargument which helped in achieving the results we prefer.

When talking about negotiations, I consider them both an art and a science. The scientific part is represented by structured frameworks, like BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement) and ZOPA (Zone of Possible Agreement) that form the rationale for a decision. These tools aid in the analysis of options. While the outcomes are predicted in an organized way. Negotiation is taken to be an art since it calls for creativity and adaptability. Different dynamics of every negotiation and the fact that success mostly relies on being able to read the nonverbal cues, create rapport, and the final solution that will satisfy parties. I am thankful about this course, because it has deepened my understanding of the two aspects, and has given me the best tools to work on conflicts effectively.
