Intercultural Business Analysis: Apple Inc. and McDonald’s Corporation

Part I: Comparative Analysis of Intercultural Business Strategies

Two quite influential American multinational institutions are Apple Inc. and McDonalds Corporation that tend to work in numerous cultural contexts. All of them have negotiated the international expansion process through culturally sensitive approaches that enable them to reach consumers of various cultural backgrounds. In this section, the presence of Apple in India and operations of McDonald in Japan have been compared in this regard to look at their intercultural effectiveness, the challenges, and market integration within them.

Apple Inc. also deems India as one of its essential markets because of its high population density and a quickly maturing digital economy. India has the potential of growing in unimaginable ways with the increasing smartphone penetration and young population who are tech-savvy. By producing iPhone locally, Apple is in line with the locally oriented business strategy as it builds its operations by partnering with Foxconn and Wistron that produce iPhones in India, aligning with the national program, the Make in India initiative (Saxena & Singh, 2023). In addition, the firm opened the first retail outlets of Apple in Mumbai and Delhi in the year 2023 with the aim of increasing brand engagement (Apple Inc., 2023). In as much as price may not be considered as a barrier to entry in a price sensitive market, Apple high priced products still act as a hindrance. In India, Android-based phones are usually more affordable and consumers tend to buy them; moreover, Apple as a luxury brand lacks its attractiveness to other buyers, especially people who cannot even afford an urban way of life (Kumar, 2022). The strategy the company has implemented regarding branding has worked in the globalization sense, but in India, the company is in danger of losing a big portion of the potential consumers based on affordability issues.

On the contrary, McDonalds Corporation has entrenched a profound and culturally adaptive existence in Japan. Ever since McDonalds opened the first Japanese outlet in 1971, it has taken steps to adapt its products to the local preferences and principles. Its menu has culturally interesting contents like Teriyaki Burger, Shrimp Filet-O-Fish, and green tea-flavored desserts which are pleasing to the Japanese taste (Nakamura, 2021). It is a company that attaches itself to Japanese standards of respect to customers, their cleanliness, and their punctuality, thus offering uniform services that are closely in touch with what is expected in society. McDonalds is however not alone in this fight as the local food outlets and even the more health conscious Japanese population pose a threat to McDonalds. As they become more health-conscious and traditional food seeking, many consumers need to meet the dilemma of good taste versus nutrition; hence, McDonald should tastefully develop dishes that they will be satisfied with. However, it has a great history and is still localizing its products making it a successful case of intercultural marketing.

Having examined the two corporations, it is evident that the McDonalds Japan is more culturally embedded. Its product adaptation and operation capacity in accordance with local values as well as the popularity of its products among customers reflect a successful intercultural business strategy. Particularly, the Teriyaki Burger is some sort of the perfect fusion of the Americans Fast-food format and the Japanese food. This renders the case of McDonalds Japan as a good case to analyse further in terms of culture and subculture.

Part II: Cultural Matching of Product and Market

In this segment, I am interested in how, the selected product, the Teriyaki Burger manufactured by McDonalds and its design in terms of visual representation and labeling, conforms with the culture of its Japanese market. The Japanese culture, lifestyle, social practices and consumer functions influence the reception of products and McDonalds has been able to modify its endeavor to suit these factors.

The Japanese society has been described to be collectivist in nature whereby social harmony and group integration take precedence over individualism. Such general attitude affects consumer behavior, stimulating people to choose shared or family-like meals. McDonalds reacts to this cultural characteristic by providing the fixed menu items and seasonal offers that promote eating together. The timing of the service provided to the customers is very effective which shows that Japanese are very concerned about being in time. Active urban lifestyle is also an asset which promotes the popularity of quick and secure food services that can be offered by McDonald with its efficient ordering establishing and delivery platforms (Takayama, 2023).

Product adaptation also consists of cultural taboos and preferences. Most Japanese would like to have much brighter meat and not that oily or rancid food. McDonalds Teriyaki Burger which is usually prepared using pork or chicken and marinated using a sweet soy based mixture, serves directly to these tastes. This dish in the menu is a hybrid of western style and local tastes, which can provide local familiarity without losing cultural identity of the brand. Moreover, Japanese have the importance of the visual presentation of food. McDonalds maintains the standards of aesthetics and orderliness of both food and its packaging as per the expectation of the locals.

Japanese lifestyles, especially the Japanese in the cities, entail rapid and heated lifestyles and diminutive residential spaces, and eating out or takeaway is therefore more prevalent as compared to cooking at home. McDonalds’ responds to this by being very quick in serving and having limited packaging of the meal. Moreover, the company has remained among the favorites of the younger generation that tends to be more appreciative of international brands yet stays close to the cultural experiences. With the Teriyaki Burger, McDonalds has given a culturally refined product that would both attract the Western branding of the product and taste of the same product to the Japanese and taste.

To sum up, it is possible to conclude that the country and the product on which research should be done further are Japan and McDonald Teriyaki Burger. The product is not only based on considering a culturally adapted product, but it also presents how the global businesses may succeed in the sphere of culturally specific enterprises. By understanding local tastes, conforming to codes of behavior and constant innovations, McDonalds Japan is a successful model of intercultural business practice.
