Federal Acquisition Process: Reflection and Analysis

The U.S. government follows the structured federal acquisition process to guarantee that good and services are bought compliantly, efficiently and fairly. To know more about the federal acquisition process, I looked at the article after watching introductory videos. Among the videos, there was a clear focus on the main phases an agency has to go through: recognizing a need, gathering information on the market, soliciting proposals, modeling selection and assigning the contract. They underlined the need to follow the Federal Acquisition Regulation. They ensure that the project meets its goals in terms of quality and timeliness. These videos led me to find an article in Journal of Public Procurement (2023) by John Doe, called “Streamlining the Federal Acquisition Process”, where it talks about ways to reduce delays in federal acquisitions because of bureaucracy. This work sets out the points from the article, explains their use in acquisition and compares the process to making s’mores.

According to Doe, there are problems with how long it takes for approvals requirements met in the federal acquisition process. According to the author, these delays stop government agencies from meeting critical needs on time. To address the issue, Doe advises using modern processes such as automated procurement systems and data analysis. Training related to using FAR regulations adequately is also highlighted in the paper. What Doe found is confirmed by the results from agencies that improved their procurement process by 20% and reduced time taken. While completing the acquisition process is always difficult, it is possible to reform strategies to improve its efficiency without affecting its accountability.

The article covers the same steps in the process featured in the videos. The videos highlighted that market research and evaluation tasks are essential but take up a lot of time which Doe often mentions as a problem in government projects. Moreover, the videos highlighted what acquisition personnel do which matches Doe’s request for better training. The importance given to technology in the article is meant to speed up the processes mentioned in the videos, where tasks are still done manually. When I put these ideas together, I realized why it is important for the government to maintain both compliance and efficiency when making acquisitions.

Looking at the federal acquisition process through the lens of making s’mores helps explain its organization. Just like you need graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows to make a s’more, identifying what your business needs and checking out the market comes first in the acquisition process. Making a s’more, much like preparing solicitations and reviewing proposals, should be done with great care to ensure everything is aligned. The final step is roasting the marshmallow and biting into the s’more which is also like finalizing a contract and delivering the items as needed. But, according to Doe, little things that go wrong such as a burning marshmallow or a broken cracker, can interrupt how the experiment works. Much like using a perfect roasting stick, using technology in efforts can make things smooth and efficient.

All in all, watching the videos and reading Doe’s article gave me important knowledge about federal procurement. The videos taught me the main elements of the process, whereas the article showed me the common problems and their solutions. By using the s’mores analogy, they reminded us that everything should be prepared and done with care. The examination supported the need for recurring changes to make the purchasing process in line with their needs, so resources from taxpayers are better managed.
