Evolution of Contracts, Acquisition and Economic Impacts.

Technology is changing the way contracts are drafted, sustainability and acquisition priorities are changing how contracts are managed. The new systems blockchains and smart contracts are reforming the contract management system by bringing more transparency, security and also increasing the efficiency. Blockchain records do not get tampered with which helps to limit disputes about the terms of a contract, while smart contracts automatic execute, according to predetermined conditions, killing manual oversight. For an example, RFID technology in supply chains, enables real time tracking of goods helping quality control by ensuring goods can comply with contract specifications. In contracts, sustainability is embedded within clauses that require understanding around eco-friendly practices. Thus using biodegradable packaging or standards around carbon emissions. This work converges with an increasing need by consumers and regulators’ demand for environmentally sustainable operations providing quality with long term sustainability goals.

Processes of acquisition have also changed considerably. Procurement has become faster and transparent with the help of e-commerce. With RFID, it provides exact inventory data to enhance its acquisition and decreases order fulfillment errors. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning will continue to shape acquisition by anticipating demand, better defining supplier choice. It will also automate contract negotiations. For instance, AI based analytics can facilitate a dynamic contract pricing in which market price variations are adjusted dynamically with real time, in the contract. Decentralized marketplaces based on Blockchain also imply that one can reduce dependence on intermediaries. This will lead to lower costs and greater efficiency.

The compliance with contracts is very much based on economic conditions. Such as, when the economy is in an economic down turn, like recessions, the suppliers may be squeezed and thus the contracts they have stay to may receive the breach such as delayed deliveries or delayed quality. Conversely, in the booming economy the supply chains are inflamed with increased demand and can prove it difficult to meet agreed upon timelines. All these risks can be adjusted with robust contracts having clear penalty clauses and contingency plans. Although these small firms are agile and innovative, they may not have the resources to tackle some of the compliance issues. Small businesses are given preference in government contracts, especially in public procurement where set aside programs ensure economic inclusion and are accompanied by strict compliance standards. But it is not governments alone that force sustainability; regulations, for example, where governments require green procurement practices that dictate contract terms across industries.

Industry insights support these trends. According to Kshetri (2018), Blockchain makes contracts more transparent and efficient in the supply chains. As Chopra and Sodhi (2021) also observe such technologies as AI and RFID are changing acquisition to acquire more accurately and more swiftly. With these technologies now in development, I do expect to see contracts be more dynamic, sustainable and resilient given the constant economic and regulatory changes as well as balancing constant needs of small business and government's mandates.
