Discussion for American History to 1865:
Spain, France, England and Netherlands were the four European powers that colonized the New World. The motifs and ways of developing the colonies were also significant because every country had its own motives and approaches.
Spain colonized places like St. Augustine (Florida) and New Spain (Mexico). The primary objectives of Spain were to become wealthy and to spread Christianity. The Spanish conquered vast regions of Central and South America after conquering Aztec Empire in 1521. They established the system of encomienda that compelled the Indigenous people to labor in the mines and plantations. Silver and gold mining were put at the center of the Spanish economy. The monarchy firmly ruled over Spanish colonies, and Catholic mission was a significant part of the process of converting Native people.
France established some colonies like Quebec (1608) and Louisiana. The French were also not preoccupied with farming or mining, rather they were more preoccupied with the fur trade as compared to Spain. French settlers tended to enter into cooperative ties with Native American tribes and, particularly, in the Great Lakes region. The French population in North America was not as large and their economy was based mainly on the trade networks. Catholic missionaries had been busy, although France did not exercise as much control or settlement as Spain or England.
England created such colonies as Jamestown (1607) and Massachusetts Bay (1630). Jamestown was established as an economic gain particularly in tobacco farming. The Puritans founded Massachusetts Bay which aimed at religious freedom. The settlement and farming communities set up by the English colonies encouraged family settlement. They also created self-government systems including the House of Burgesses in Virginia, which provided the colonists with political experience.
New Netherland was the creation of the Netherlands and had its center at New Amsterdam. The Dutch were more directed towards trade and commerce. The Dutch West India Company governed their colony. They encouraged religious toleration and accommodated various kinds of settlers, i.e. various European groups and the slaves.
In general, Spain was concerned with conquering and mining, France with trade and alliances, England with agriculture and self-government, and the Dutch with commerce and tolerance. Such differences formed the politics and cultural base of North America.
