Comparison between primary and secondary sources

A primary resource is an original, firsthand record of an event that was produced at the time of the event. The main resource in this case is the interview with Leonard Nimoy, recorded in the same place, on CNN. Yet, this material is a function of what Nimoy himself had to say concerning his experiences, thoughts, and the like, and in real time, as a direct source of information. This resource is based on the idea of providing firsthand knowledge and personal views of Nimoy about his career and life. (Glen Oliver, 2012).This is an example of a purpose of an interview: to give viewers an authentic and unfiltered account of the individual’s experiences as being told directly from him himself.

A secondary resource, on the other hand, is an analysis, an interpretation, or a summary of a primary source. In this particular scenario, the secondary resource is the news article talking about Nimoy’s interview after the news of his death. However, this article does not present any original content from Nimoy. Instead, it discussed and interpreted the interview and sparked a discussion on what Nimoy presented and what it means in the context of what has not yet come to pass. The main goal of this secondary source is to create a context, analysis, and possibility to see Nimoy’s statements in the interview with a fresh eye. The goal of the article is to provide information to the audience by summarizing and assessing the primary source and anachronism; moreover, suitable context should be added historically or analytically.

When compared with the two sources, there are many differences. The primary source is Nimoy’s unfiltered thoughts and the raw and direct information, while the secondary source would introduce biases and interpretations from the author. A drawback of the primary source is that it doesn’t provide any additional context or analysis, and thus the secondary source does just that. (Nimoy, 2021). However, the secondary source may not have the authenticity and personal depth of the primary source. The primary source would be the more valuable source in terms of research for projects that require direct evidence or firsthand accounts, whereas the secondary source is for gaining greater context and a thickening interpretation. In the case of a research project, I would suggest using the primary source because it gives original views without the effect of outside influences. Accuracy and authenticity of scholarly work are given by the primary source, making it an important foundation.
