Career Exploration Reflection on Criminal Justice Pathways
Being a first-year student at a college with a major in Criminal Justice, this semester has been a significant time in my personal realization and exploration of career. The recent conversations in classes, self-assessment exercises, career research and campus-related resources enabled me to have a better insight into possible career opportunities in the sphere of criminal justice. Becoming a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Special Agent and becoming a local/state police officer are the two most appealing career paths to me at the current moment and are the two occupations I am aiming to pursue in the long term of my life. The two professions are similar in that both are concerned with defending the citizens and enforcing the law, however, in scale, responsibilities, and preparation, they differ. The thought of my interests, skills, and values has made me be more aware of which direction can be the most suitable to me.
Among all the career paths which I have tried to learn more about, the two that have impressed me the most are that of an FBI Special Agent and a police officer. I will like to know more about the FBI due to the investigation of serious federal crimes like terrorism, cybercrime, organized crime, and governmental corruption. I find working on complicated cases at a national or international scale an attractive opportunity, in part, due to its team-based work, ability to solve problems, and the aspect of long-term investigations. The Federal Bureau of Investigation reported that special agents are tasked with the responsibility of collecting intelligence, investigation and safeguarding the national security. The focus on professionalism and high-level training of the FBI corresponds with my aspiration to work in demanding and significant profession.
Simultaneously, I too take a great interest in being a police officer. Police officers are crucial in ensuring that societies are safe through law enforcement, emergency response as well as establishing credibility with the community. I find this career attractive due to the first hand impact that officers are able to bring into the lives of people. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a police officer has the duty to safeguard both life and property and ensure order in the community and that is why the position is crucial to the health of the community.
The FBI Special Agent and career path of police officer share a number of similarities. They both demand a high level of dedication to the service of the people, ethical behavior and the law. In both of the positions, physical fitness, mental discipline, and working under pressure are critical. Also, both professions demand academy education, background checks, and effective communication. In the two professions, teamwork and good judgment are also key to success.
These similarities notwithstanding, the two career paths have significant differences. Police officers are usually at the local or state level and they are involved in the patrols, traffic patrol, and are also involved in answering the calls of service. They tend to work very fast and in the society. In comparison, FBI Special Agents are federal level and target long term investigations that may take months and years to close. To be an FBI agent, a college education is also needed along with previous professional experience and many police departments permit one to start working soon after finishing their academy training.
According to my interests, the career path of FBI Special Agent seems a more effective fit in the long-term perspective. I would especially like to research in the field of investigation, information analysis, and solving complex problems. I love reading about the criminal behavior and the ways of how crimes are prevented and prosecuted. Although police work is full of significance and excitement, investigative nature and the countrywide nature of the FBI work is more in line with the intellectual stimulation I am interested in.
Skills-wise, a police officer can now be a better fit. Being a policeman involves good interpersonal skills, decision-making, and adaptability, which I am still working on, both in my studies and in my life. Cop officers can have good experience very early in their careers which may be helpful in gaining confidence and practical skills in law enforcement. The analytical and investigative skills needed to work with the FBI can be further trained and developed with further learning and experience, which I believe I can gain over time.
In reference to my values, both professions relate with what I consider the most important in life, such as integrity, service and responsibility. Nevertheless, more of my long-term values, such as professional development, national service, and making a difference in the public safety at a larger scale, are in line with the FBI. The fact that the organization focuses on morals, responsibility, and professionalism in their work demonstrates the nature of a professional that I hope to be.
To sum it up, discussing these two career opportunities has enabled me to understand my objectives as a Criminal Justice major. Although being an officer of a police department and an FBI Special Agent are equally esteemed and influential professions, the FBI seems to be the better choice between them in the long run, and my interests and values. The reflection has solidified my desire to keep on with my studies, pursue related experience, and be devoted to pursuing a law enforcement career.
