An Ethical Crisis in Policing: The Case of Tyre Nichols
Article Overview
The chosen source is a list of the reporting of The New York Times on the death of Tyre Nichols, 29-year-old Black man, after violent traffic stop of Memphis Police Department (MPD) officers on January 7, 2023. The article elaborates the circumstances that led to the arrest of Nichols, the savage beating on body camera shots, and its deteriorating effect. The key arguments are the original reason of the stop (reckless driving), the immediate escalation of force on the part of the officers and the fact that the officers in this case belonged to the unit known as SCORPION which was promoted as a crime-suppression unit. The paper notes that the five directly involved officers were terminated within minutes as well as serious criminal charges, such as second-degree murder were filed. It also records the national outcry and the decision made by the City of Memphis, to permanently shut down the SCORPION unit.
Critical Reflection
Reading the description of this case and watching the recordings released is accompanied by a strong feeling of hopelessness. The extreme brutality shown by the officers is an essential betrayal of the oath of protecting and serving. The most worrying fact is the violation of several ethical foundations of policing such as use of excessive force, neglecting the duty of providing the aid and undermining trust in the community. I am simultaneously enraged at the actions of the particular officers themselves. I am also concerned about the social culture within the system that might have encouraged this kind of behavior.

Critical Reflection
Reading the description of this case and watching the recordings released is accompanied by a strong feeling of outrage and hopelessness. The extreme brutality and the seemingly inhumane attitude shown by the officers is an essential betrayal of the oath of protecting and serving. The most worrying fact is the violation of several ethical foundations of policing such as use of excessive force, neglecting the duty of providing the aid and undermining trust in the community. I am simultaneously enraged at the actions of the particular officers themselves, and more concerned about the social culture within the system that might have encouraged this kind of behavior. This took place in a specialized unit; this is an indication that the use of aggressive and zero-tolerance policing strategies was not only accepted but possibly welcomed which fostered an atmosphere in which such ethical violations would thrive.
