A critical analysis of the LGBTQ present

Views from Younger LGBTQ Writers

Young LGBTQ writers at present challenge traditional understandings that prevail inside our community. Young LGBTQ writers create resistance toward legal focus such as marriage rights by introducing alternative debates that include broader views. After the Supreme Court decision Silas House published an account about being subjected to discrimination in his own life. According to House (2018, p.1), the Colorado baker Jack Phillips along with others believe they have full dominion over God and belief systems. Higher education develops critical thinking that enables younger individuals to analyze personal belief systems which serve to deny access to others.

According to Peter Knegt the evolving LGBT community prompts many white gay cis men to reconsider their position within it. According to Larry Kramer he urged gay individuals to move past celebrations and embrace substantial duties. According to Kramer’s observations as shared by Knegt: "We have the ultimate in freedom – we have absolutely no responsibilities! – and we're abusing it" (Knegt, 2020, p.1). Youth recognition of gender and sexuality shows their perspective differs from past perspectives which were mainly concentrated on marriage equality.

Has Society Entered a "Post-Homo" Era?

Experts debate whether our contemporary society represents a “post-homo” environment since LGBTQ identity no longer dominates cultural conversations. The articles demonstrate that although progress has led to legal victories such as marriage equality discrimination against LGBTQ people continues to persist. According to House's Colorado baker case experience LGBTQ people continue to confront big difficulties. The decision will spark more battles in the culture wars between religious and societal values according to his perspective (House, 2018, p.1). The struggles regarding LGBTQ rights have evolved but not disappeared because new challenges appear.

Gay Marriage: The Arguments For and Against

Different points of view exist about the issue of same-sex marriage. People backing marriage equality believe it provides essential rights while granting important legal benefits including hospital visitation privileges as well as tax advantages. These proponents find it unjust to deny marriage rights to same-sex couples because such denial conveys an unaccepting message.

The opposition to gay marriage mainly uses either religious grounds or traditional values to establish their stance. Several objections directed against marriage rights actually focus on rejecting cultural and political developments that result from LGBTQ identity recognition. The establishment of legal marriage according to House has resulted in other significant problems disappearing from public view. According to his research there exists widespread discrimination which affects various parts of life beyond marriage (House, 2018, p.1). The problem with the political attention to gay marriage seems to worry opponents because it may distract attention from other pressing issues.

Is Gay Culture Toxic?

A large ongoing debate exists regarding the potential toxic impact of both white gay cis cultural practices in particular and gay culture altogether. Knegt demonstrates in his article that the negative behaviors of excessive partying combined with social irresponsibility have generated criticism. According to Knegt (2020) gay people experience complete freedom without any obligations so they misuse this power (p.1). Some aspects of gay culture possibly contribute to self-harm and discriminatory tendencies. Several components of LGBTQ community life exist across members but the LGBTQ spectrum does not provide equal treatment to every individual identity. Transgender people alongside different members of the LGBTQ community who are nonbinary and queer people of color face special difficulties while navigating both internal and external LGBTQ spaces.

Questions and Comments for Further Discussion

1.                  Based on the House’s case study, what are some issues faced by LGBTQ people that are different from traditional marriage?

2.                  Why is there a need for responsibility of LGBTQ people according to Knegt’s article?

3.                  Is there a need to shift from activism of LGBTQ people to solving general discrimination in the society?
